For many, the kitchen is the heart of the home. From cooking to entertaining and relaxing, it is the center of daily life. Think about how much time you spend in your kitchen on a daily basis and what you enjoy about your current kitchen. Now, think about what things you would like to change. This is a good starting point for making your dream kitchen a reality. It may seem overwhelming to look through all of the kitchen options out there, but all you need to keep in mind is what is important to you. Simply put, your new kitchen is all about you.
Let’s get the mundane tasks out of the way. Keep in mind, even a small to average remodel can result in a 69 to 75% return on your investment.Budget, Measurements & Timing
Budget: Set a dollar amount for what you anticipate spending. There are many choices available to meet your taste, budget, and needs on any budget level.
Measurements: Basic wall measurements will be required to properly lay out your new kitchen cabinets. Measurements will need to include windows, doors, plumbing, electrical, and the locations of your appliances. If you are planning on having your cabinetry professionally installed, the measurements you use should be provided by your contractor to ensure accuracy. Sketching your kitchen can help you visualize your measurements and the space you’re working with. You can check out our Kitchen Cabinet Planning Guide for tips on measuring your space and a free design grid to make your sketching easy.
Timing: How soon do you want your new kitchen? Menards® offers both in-stock cabinetry options, which can be taken home immediately, and personalized special order options, which can be ready in four weeks or less.
With all the colors, styles, and options available, choosing kitchen cabinets is really all about you! Let’s break down the important considerations to help make your dream a reality.

Let’s break down the important considerations to help make your dream a reality.
Color, Wood Species & Panels
Color: Typically, color is what you will be drawn to when replacing your kitchen cabinets. There are many stain and paint colors to choose from, and this decision can be very important when remodeling a kitchen. Take a deep breath, relax, and take your time; this decision is yours and should be enjoyable to make.
Wood Species: Kitchen cabinets are available in alder, birch, cherry, hickory, maple, oak, and many other species. Each type of wood features unique characteristics and colors that will vary based on the wood you select. But rest assured, you can inspect samples of each wood species at your local Menards® store to ensure that you choose the right tone.
Panels: The style of panel you choose can help set the tone for your entire kitchen. From recessed to cathedral to shaker and more, Menards® carries a wide range of the most popular styles in the color and species of your choice. Visit the cabinets and appliances department of your local Menards® store to see the full collection of colors, wood species, and styles available for your remodel or browse our exciting offerings online.
Laying out your kitchen starts with the space you have to work with. There are four basic kitchen “shapes” to choose from, and which one you pick often depends on the room you already have. The basic kitchen shapes are:
• Straight or I-shaped: All of the work area is located along one wall
• Galley: Divides the work space onto opposite walls, making it ideal for a home that often has two cooks in the kitchen
• L-shaped: Puts the work space on two adjoining walls, saving space and keeping your essential appliances close at hand
• U-shaped: Gives you the most counter and cabinet space by spreading the workspace over three adjoining walls
You may also choose to incorporate an island in your new layout. Islands can provide additional work and storage space, but they are not ideal for smaller spaces as they may cause the kitchen to feel crowded.
Menards® has several ways to help you determine which layout will work best for your home. A Menards® Team Member is always willing to help with any questions you may have along the way. We’ve put together a simple planning guide to help you keep track of what features you want in your new kitchen. You can sketch out your ideal layout on the included design grid and bring it in to your local Menards® store for a free virtual 3D rendering of your design. You can also design your layout in the comfort of your own home using the Ū CRËATË Cabinetry Planner tool. This is a great way for you to be the designer, incorporating all of the features that are important to you. When you’re finished with your design, you can easily complete your cabinet purchase online.
It’s easy to simply place cabinets to fill your wall, but it’s what’s inside that requires some additional thought. Do you constantly get frustrated when you have to pull out five different pans to find the one you need? Adding a pot and pan organizer inside the cabinet will turn that frustration into jubilation. Pantry storage, cooking equipment organization, trash and recycling, a place for charging phones or tablets, and even entertaining – there are cabinet accessory options available tailored to fit your exact needs.
